Question about Timing Chain
I have a 98 Ranger 4.0 V6 with 203,000 miles that has the original timing chain and seals. It is running OK but sometimes acts up a little. I was wondering if it could be the chain is worn and how would I know it was time to change it. Does it seem like with that many miles it would be good preventive procedure to change it out even though it is running good right now? Thanks for your thoughts on this. Les

If it's not making noise, run it. But you wouldn't be wrong to change it. Those have a hydraulic tensioner that helps avoid the wandering idle and other problems caused by worn components. I just sent a '99 Explorer down the road with 130k. Original plugs. It smogged perfect. Zero or minimum on every measure. Sturdy and reliable.
