Thumbs down 2.9L Timing Chain life?

I have an '86 Ranger S/C 4X4 with the 2.9L engine with about 230Kmiles and have never replaced the timing chain. Just curious as to how long these things last? I'm getting ready to depart on a bit of a trip and would rather replace it now vice along the hiway it at all possible. Anyone have one give it up with around this number of miles on the engine?

Just curious.

D.

Well, that is a ton of miles. What I would do is hook up one of them old world timing lights, point the light at the timing marks, rev the engine up slowly and let it wind down, and see how steady the timing is throughout. I would also do the same at idle and at maybe 2000 rpm, just look at the timing marks and see how steady the timing is. If it's all over the place, bad new. But then again, if it was all over the place it would run lousy too. Something to think about.

Monty, that would be timing belt life. These timing chains should (and almost always do) outlast the engine.

Thank you, I was worried there for a bit. I've never seen a timing chain be replaced at 75K miles. Now a belt on the other hand, that is pretty much expected of them, if you want to control your costs.

Thanks for the replies, I feel better now.

FWIW, When I rebuilt my 2.9L @ 98,000 miles the timing chain and gears were in great shape. The tensioner had a little wear, but I ended just replacing it all anyway. I certainly could have reused the old timing set, but I didn't want to push it with the tensioner. The guy at the machine shop was telling me if it fails my engine is toast.

My 87 has 240,000 on it. The heads finally cracked and the head gasket failed so it is in the middle of an overhaul right now. The timing chain was in good shape as far as I could tell. It will be replaced however. There is no sense in tempting fate.

my 87 ranger is pushing a hell of alot more miles then you guys and the chain still has enough go left in it to whip some civic *** in a street race. i wouldn't worry about it unless your see a power loss or your rebuilding the engin where its always good to replace those key parts just to sqeeze in a lil more life for the engin
