So I’ve been looking for a motor for my bullnose project
I have noticed a motor for sale that has 4 barrel intake, roller rockers, performance cam. supposed to be low mileage on the build. Guy says he has no idea on the specs. It’s on a stand. He was going to put it in something and decided otherwise.
I’m interested but don’t know what to look for. If it was in something and I could run it I would be much more confident.
1500$
When it comes to internals on engines I don’t have much experience. Is it worth looking into, possibly making an offer?
I have read about hitting a point where you have to run premium in these depending on the build. I do not want that!
looking to put a 300 in an F250. Zf5 probly, daily driver, firewood hauler, boat hauler, buck hauler.
Have access to a couple backyard F150’s w fuel injected 6 engines. Likely would need a rebuild but it’s an option.. at least I would know what I’ve got at that point.
When I buy used engines, it's either one of a few ways. If it is assembled, either I can see it run, and do a compression check and an oil pressure check, or I'll buy it with figuring it is in need of a rebuild. Some of the stuff this motor, you can visually check, such as the intake and rockers, by popping the valve cover off. The cam....it's a crap shoot. If the valve cover comes off, the cleanliness will be an indicator. If it's crusty....it's a core. If it's clean, it might be good.
Honestly for something like that, I would prefer to see it with the head, pan and side cover off. If it was all fresh looking, I might pay the price. If that is not possible, I'd try to negotiate down.
With limited experience, even with all the external stuff, and not know what to look for, it's still a crap shoot. Then it comes down to trust and risk assessment.
