I've got your standard e rated factory tires and drove through an unkept pasture (mesquite trees growing up in the path) and got a tiny twig stuck in my sidewall. My warranty is covering it but I thought 10 ply tires wouldn't be so easy to puncture. This twig was super thin as well. Ford told me that the sidewalls are not e rated which I'm not sure I agreed with. My former f150 had e rated tires and never encountered an issue in the same pasture before so it hade thinking that maybe this guy is right.
My spare is also causing the steering wheel to shake which I'm not too happy about. If the tire is good and not have been used much, what would cause the steering wheel to shake? I haven't encountered a death wobble yet but this seems to be along those lines from what I've heard.
The tires may be “E” rated, but that just means their max load capacity spec is based on 80 psi cold inflation pressure (up to a certain LT tire size).
The “E” rating typically means they’re “10-ply rated”, but it doesn’t mean they’re 10-ply construction. Check your tires’ sidewalls for the actual construction configuration.
I now believe our truck’s E tires each contain a total of just five plies: two in the sidewalls and the tread (the polyester plies), plus three more under just the tread (the one polyamide plus the two steel); see the pic below.
Regarding the spare, check the inside of the wheel for any accumulation of dirt, mud, stone, etc. that could of thrown of its balance. If it’s clean, then you may need to have the wheel and tire rebalanced.
I am not a tire expert. From past bad sidewall failure experience I learned that some tires have thinner sidewalls and load ratings were not the key as much as number of sidewall plies. A high load tire may still only have a two ply sidewall where other tires have three ply.vsidewall.
