My 2017 F-350 DRW was a left over I purchased in 2018. My frame and front springs looked faded like that when compared to arrival to the lot.
Yep, that's why my first thought was that one had been sitting on the lot longer than the other. Or maybe one was sitting in a field awaiting chips and the other was a fresher build. Either way, that nice shiny black doesn't last long.
It's been sprayed for sure. What's been added to the truck? There is definitely something thats been added on top of that frame for upfit. Notice how all the factory galvanized bolts are now black.

Ford and Ram utilize Electrostatic Coatings for frames and bodies. You've most likely seen seen video of a car body being submerged in a grey/green liquid tank. The company I proudly work for pioneered that process and the chemical technology that's applied. These coating do not have UV stabilizers built in so they look old quickly. The frames are similar. GM is not, they still use wax.

I missed it the first time but that picture above clearly shows the paint line between factory and new paint. Also that leaf spring photo is more evidence of being painted. So I guess it is 2 different frame coatings, although one is factory the other not.

It is a clever process but unfortunately the product applied is garbage. Not being UV stable isn't much of a factor but the very thin application and poor durability is. Now that the Super Duty frame is boxed it will be interesting to see what this frames look like in a few years in the harsher climates. Like F-150's and Wrangers I imagine if not protected. Wish Ford would go back to wax on the Super Duty.

The top picture is fresh from the factory, the bottom picture is fresh from the upfitter.
