Hi guys. I have a ~81 300 in my 69. Pulled the engine a while back and wow look at that starter! There's a bit of a mixture in the bay because of the mismatched engine but this might be one of the results of it. Is this normal? Are the starter and ring gear mismatched? Or is it just how they wear?
Also, that little piece of metal was bouncing around in the starter case. Does that belong somewhere?
Either way I was going to get these at Rock and figure that would work going forward.
I would pull the ring gear and flip it and put it back onto the flywheel. Once you have a new starter, you want to have good teeth for both to work well together. Secondly, those bolts for the Pressure Plate do not look correct. I believe they are supposed to be grade 8 bolts, those look like standard big box store ones.
Engine is pulled while I work on cab mounts and floor pans. I probably won't get to putting it back together it until the new year or so honestly.
I did buy a matching starter and ring gear for a 69 dispite the engine being an ~81 according to the casting number. I am trying to use 69 compatible parts as much as possible assuming that they are compatible with what's already there. For example the fuel pump has to be the one used in 81 but the replacement distributor cap, wires, plugs are the ones listed it as 69. At least I believe so. I'm going to take the flywheel to get it turned and put the new ring gear on at the local engine machine shop. Not a lot of other things changed from what I gather across the full application of a 300 I6.

Also big thanks for the tip on the bolts I will double check them!
