I’ve had about enough of the typewriter tick. From the research I’ve done, 5w-40 synthetic is one of the go-to fixes but still seems to be somewhat hit and miss. I’ve not read one instance where XL-17 failed to stop the tick. In fact I’ve read about dealerships that won’t change 6.7 oil without it because they don’t want to hear complaints about the tick.
Does this sound accurate?
And yes I’m willing to pay whatever exorbitant price that it costs…that’s how much I can’t stand the tick.
Well XL-17 is just powdered carbon and 2% zinc. It does help the noise. Using LiquiMoly Mos2 also provides the same result for some people. Others just wait the noise out, I have heard the noise in hundreds of these trucks and while annoying I can't say it does anything to longevity.
I used Rotella T6 5W-40 and then the 15W-40 when it came out, along with Valvoline Blue Synthetic 5W-40 and nothing changed. Always had it, in both trucks.
I bought my ‘16 F-250 with 26k miles on it. I changed to T-6 15w/40 and have had no issues, now 70k miles. Only time I had any noise was a tank of bad fuel. Got rid of it and changed all filters and no problems. I do still use OEM oil filters, T-6 is what I will run in my ‘22 when it arrives after first oil change. I usually do a first oil change at 1k-2k miles and cut open a filter just to make me feel good.
I’m decided on 5w40 not only for the tick but also because I do frequent short trips for work. I have a 16 mile commute to/from home but I do a lot of 1 mile here 2 miles there for work so I think that puts me under the severe duty cycle.
I need to decide between Rotella, Vavoline or Motorcraft. With the first two, there is a mixture of people saying it caused the tick and it stopped the tick. I’m seeing much less feedback on the motorcraft.

dealerships won’t change 6.7 oil? No, that does not sound accurate.
