I need some of your assistance. I am planning to replace most, if not all, of the suspension on my 1973 F250 Highboy.
1. I am attempting to buy shock absorbers, is this a lift block on the rear suspension? and when selecting shocks, do I consider the length of this lift (i.e. 0-4 inches...etc). I want to put this Rancho RS5000X Gas Shocks Set for 1970-1979 Ford F250 4WD RWD w/2-4" lift.
I believe.....someone may correct me but that block is factory installed. My 77f150 has one looks just like it with the bumpstop arm sticking out the side. My lift kit came with an additional block to put under that block......... You need shocks for stock suspension height.
Edit I.may have misunderstood the question I thought looking for shock for current setup. Of looking for a lift then 4 inch lift block wise would be 4 inch added to whats there or one new 4 inch taller than the existing
If current is 4 inch and removed for a 6 inch that.would be a 2 inch lift...
The height of the block is lift so measure that. and add that to your desired lift target from where you are now. so block height + desired additional lift from where you are currently = The lift spring you want to eliminate your blocks. The final number will be the shock specs you want.
I read this from OP " I am planning to replace most, if not all, of the suspension on my 1973 F250 Highboy." and that he wanted a 2"-4' lift so if for example the block = 4" it would require a 6"-8" lift spring if replace = eliminate the blocks and a shock to match. Right?
Mighty fine looking truck you have there. Maybe you aren't planning on it but I wouldn't replace leaf springs on a highboy unless they have visible issues like a broken leaf or a lot of sag making the truck sit uneven. Often the spring eye bushings will be shot if originals. I spray my springs with a 40/60 mixture of diesel fuel and hydraulic oil. It seeps in between the leaves and provides a friction reduction between leaves as they flex. As mentioned you have a stock factory setup.
If you are going to replace the springs and don't want any lift I would certainly get a set that eliminates the blocks. There is no upside to blocks except it is a cheap way to lift a vehicle. They contribute to spring wrap, road sway, and poor tracking on the highway.
