I haven't read much on SYNC 4, but I'm wondering if SYNC 3 trucks can get it 4 as an update, or if it is only going to be available on 2022+ MY trucks.

Nope.
You’re going to have to purchase a 2022 SD to get SYNC 4.

So preliminary part numbers say its possible ( truck must have factory wifi). There is going to be some time involved in figuring out as built values. The biggest hurdle is how the truck will respond to the fordpass app. Remember the Sync 4 is only available in the Lariat and above trucks, lower trims still get Sync 3. It would be worth looking at the F150 which gets Sync 4 in a 8" screen and comparing parts and APIM fitment.
I don't think you can get the sync 4 software to run on a sync 3 radio, it just doesn't have the compatible hardware to run it.
It's not going to be like upgrading to a newer operating system on windows or something like that.
Now, you could possibly change over the whole system, but you'd spend a fortune doing it.

So I gather there are no facts yet, and evidently not even a consensus of opinion. To the first responder, I only meant the software installed on current model SYNC 3.x system hardware (I have a 2019 with factory WiFi and Lariat trim, per @ford390gashog comments). I'm not displeased with SYNC 3, but there are some obvious design changes I think should be made and hope they would be included in a SYNC 3 update or SYNC 4, so I'll be keeping my eye on options.
