Fast idle setting

Maybe I'm just stupid but I don't get this whole thing about setting the fast idle on the "correct cam setting" thing. I've read about it in the TSB, Shop Manual and had it sort of explained in the forum and it doesn't make sense. What the heck am I supposed to do? Screw in the adjusting screw and start it up to see if it idles high enough to run when cold? I'm probably over thinking this. That's why I'm in quality Has anyone out there ever had to adjust the fast idle? mine has to be at 1900 and right now, when the truck will run when cold it's at 1000. I have to keep my foot on the gas for about two minutes to allow the choke to fully open and then it runs fine albeit a little rough.

I'd really like to know the answer to this as well. I have an 84 2bbl (ford holley?) 351w. I put a kit in the carb and the truck runs great but, like yours, seems to fast idle way to high. If I adjust the dashpot on the linkage side of the carb, when it warms up it dies. How bout it? What are we missing?

look at the choke linkage on the left side of the carb as you face it from the front of the truckremove air cleaner of coarse now set the choke by moveing the throttle linkage but watch the choke linkage on the left do yuo see the cam it's the sorta halfmoon with steps on it do you see where it hits the screw thats the choke hi idle screw thats what you adjust get the truck to running temp set the choke by hand look at the step the cam is on put to the correct step (usually the second step) and check rpm

I see everything you pointed out. I found the screw and the half moon thing is green no my carb. I will have to buy a flexible screw driver because I cant adjust it with any of the 25 screw drivers I own.

I need some clarificaton. What do you mean by "set the choke"?

I have the oposite problem actually. When the engine is cold, it wont run unless I keep my foot on the gas.

To set the choke you depress the accelerator fully one time with a cold engine. You can also push the cable from under the hood to achieve the same effect. When you do this the spring on the electric choke should cause the fast idle cam to rotate so the second step lines up with adjusting screw. Once the engine warms up, the spring on the choke is longer and won't hold the step in front of the screw, so regular idle adjustment can be made.

Ok. My bigest problem is the fact that I can't actally "see" the cam settings. I guess this will have to be a shot in the dark but I here that can often be the case with fast idle. With your info, I think I can at least get started. Thanks
