fuel pumps

I have 1985 F250 Dually with a 460. just got done installing new intake, carb, water pump and TDC timing set also dont have to worry about emissions so removed it all, huge improvement! Of course now it seems as though my fuel pumps are dead. The rear tank didn't work when I first got it a month ago. I switch tanks, and I can hear the switch click over but never heard rear pump working front one I could hear. Just yesterday truck died checked fuel and was getting none, couldn't hear the pump running anymore. Is it common for these pumps to fail? Or is there a common problem with wiring,my chiltons manual doesn't seem to contain much info on dual tanks especially on wiring. I would appreciate any insite before I start pulling tanks.
