Got a call from a friend this AM who has a late 80's BMW he crashed long time ago and sitting in the back yard for a while, finally he's going to trash, anyhow, he said I could have whatever I wanted from it.
So i am planning on taking the flip hood hinge, anyone have a BMW hinge on their truck, is so how hard are these to adapt to a 53-56 F100.....pics maybe?
53, not sure if it was in Classic Trucks or Custom Classic Trucks but there was an article a few years back installing that flip hood hinge. PJS55 (John) has completed an index of articles for both mags. He could probably narrow it down for you.
go to my page and look in the tech stuff for John Pul's index... there have been a couple of articles on the BMW style tilt unit installs... he will have them indexed there... do a search on the word 'tilt' and it should show up...
the magazines offer back issues and if you can't find it, let me know and maybe I can find the issue..
Custom Classic Truck
February 1999
"Install Reverse Tilt Hood"
August 1994
Tilt Hood How to"
Classic Trucks
April 1999
(in order by months)
Man ain’t this a b****, it is the April 1999 issue of Classic Trucks, now I don't know if this one uses a BMW hinge, but I have sporadic 1999 issues but not that one, the irony, picture is from an ebay auction, but does anyone have any of these articles, or mags, before I bid and find out the april 1999 issue is a “buy this kit” how to….
53, I have those issues. I will look and see and can scan them for you if you want. It may take me a couple of days though, as I have to hunt through them etc. Not as organized as some (or as I should be)
I just looked through the latest version of my index and here's what's out there.
CT - feb 92 - kit from Bob's f-100 using BMW parts
CCT - aug 94 - kit from Mike Chesser's - looks like it uses the BMW parts as well
CCT - dec 94 - kit from SoCal or B.P.E. Precision that uses BMW parts
CCT - feb 99 - kit from Classic Performance products - could possibly be BMW as well
It looks like all of them use the BMW rollers and hinge mechanism with some added bracketry. Its probably worth the effort to grab the entire hindge and bracket arrangement and check it out with your truck to see what you could fabricate yourself.
i could take these articles to work, scan and e-mail to you if you wish. They are all copies from magazines that I have borrowed to compile this index. The CT feb 92 article came from a loaner from Kecky. the remainder were copied from issues that I borrowed from a local hot rod shop.
BTW, John, with just a little more clean-up, I will have the latest version of the index off to you to update your website. Other than that 4rth issue of CT in 94, this will include every issue of CT and CCT from inception to end of 2003 plus some extra bonus stuff. Did you ever get your issues back.
When you do it man, let me know cause i have a HUGE problem with my hood and going to flip it now.....saves a lot of money and gives a lot of more room to work in that engine area...
I did my own kit since I had modified my radiator cross member, but the concept is the same. The tech article came out a little funny when converted to html, so if you want a "clean copy", e-mail me and I will send one in .pdf format.
I think these hood conversions are best called "BMW style" in that the hood opens forward similar to a BMW, not that they actually use BMW parts.
I think you would be way ahead to just bite the bullet and buy one of the kits available from the many vendors. As important as getting the hood to fit and operate properly is, I don't think you woule save any money in the end if you had ten free BMW hood hinges. There's a lot more to it than just the hinge. The guide brackets at the cowl and the follower wheels are very important. They're not that complicated, but to make them from scratch yourself would be a lot of work and aggrivation.
