I have a 74 f250 w/390. I just put a edelbrock 600 on it and it is giving me fits. It will start up ok but if I drive it anywhere and shut it off and let it set for 15 to 20 minutes, you have to pump the hell out of it to get it to start and blows white and black smoke like it is flooded or something. But if I drive it and shut it off and start it within 5 or so minutes, it starts right up.. Anyone have any ideas?
I haven't smelled the tail pipe for gas smell yet, and no I haven't messed with anything else. On a cold start, it starts fine. It is only hard to start after it has been running a while and it sits for 15 20 minutes. I did read where these edelbrocks have a hard time starting because of the gas boiling in the bowl from the heat of the engine. Edelbrock has a gasket or something for this reason. I will have to check and see if mine has it .

No smell of gas at the tailpipe and I don't have the spacer. After driving it about 40 miles today, when I got home and shut it off. I popped the hood and I could hear a noise in the carburetor like the the gas was boiling inside.

Can you post pics of your setup without the air cleaner to include both the back and front of the intake? Also what temps are you running at? and what type of gasket ate you running between the carb and intaj=ke? and how thick is it approx. ?
If you go with a 4160, I very strongly suggest not getting the cheaper version. It does not have a serviceable secondary metering block (you can't re-jet the rear two barrels). And it does not have "center hung" float bowls. They're side hung, and a pain in the butt. You can ID this carburetor by the external fuel line that goes from front to rear on the throttle lever side of the carburetor. A 4150 style Holley has center hung floats, separate fuel supply lines for each float bowl, and a serviceable secondary metering block. I like that carburetor.
If you have to have an Edelbrock, I suggest you get away from the Performer model, and get an AVS2. I've got two of them and I'm very impressed with them. Easy to tune, and the annular discharge primaries make it fell like fuel injection. Seamless transition between circuits.
And for your own sake, consider getting an air/fuel ratio gauge and a vacuum gauge. You'll never again have to guess and blindly stab at carburetor tuning.
I like my "guy on a budget" Holley's 4180C for 620 cfm
You get all the bells and whistles as the 4160 but can be built for $200 if you get a rebuild-able core for $100.

X2 Money well spent and edlebrock does make a good one of those. You'll need to add a couple of Oxygen sensor bungs to your exhaust as well.

I had the same problem. I tried different spacers to isolate the heat soak and the one that worked best for me is a 2" 4 hole. Which helped with my Holley Street Dominator manifold. I say heat soak is the problem and you pumping the gas to restart will not help.
The Edelbrock is just a reproduction Carter AFB , and Carter went broke so go figure. but just like VW bugs some people like them so they keep making them.
Has this carb worked on this engine until now or is it a new or used install you're working on ?
