whats required to put 302 H.O in truck
hi i was thinkin of either puttin a 351w or a h.o 302 in my 1990 ford half ton which has a 302 in it now. what would be required to put a 302 h.o out of a mustang in there ? i know youd probably need the computer. could you use the the intakes and pulleys off of the truck 302? also i know my trucks speed density and 302 h.o most likely mass air would there be any problems there ? i know the truck 302 have a knock sensor on them do the mustangs? well thanks for any help that can be offered as i am still deciding between the 2 motors but figure i take which ever one i can find for the best price 351w arent that common around here

I had an engine shop rebuild my 302. They put flat top pistons, ported and polished the heads, and put an RV cam in it. Then I put new injectors and what not in it and it is stronger than ever. I have 1000 dollars in the rebuild and injectors. That is what I would do if I was you it is probly going to come out the same money wise.

Mustangs don't have a knock sensor on them (Till 93 anyway, don't know about the 94-95 5.0's)
The difference is the roller cam. You need to know what you want to do with the truck. I'd say that if you have to go out and buy one, go with the 351. Otherwise just rebuild the 302 that you have.
I'm in the same boat that you are with trying to descide what to do. I've got an 89 Bronco with a 302 that needs to be rebuilt. I'm thinking of geting a 351 for it. I also have the sick idea of a 460, but I don't think I'd ever do it becasue of the smog test thing...

i usd a 90 linc 302 that had the gt40 heads came with the same cam as my truck by part #, it was basically a mustang motor? it had a hole in the back already for the knock sens. ive mentioned i it before on here and i dont know what all the hyp is about, the only thing to get excited about witha h.o. is the cam that switches the cycle of 3457 reversing the compression and intake/exhaust stroke. i am sure there is a higher knowledge as to why this difference would be better for power but this is the jist of it. about the only other thing to get excited about is a possibility of a set of nice heads that bump compression like the gt40 or e7's where the chamber volume is reduced, i like to think by bumping compression and running a cam longer duration/performance cam you r adjusting the ratio the motor runs and ability to pump volumes in and out of it, much the same you dont want to run too little compression with a long duration/perf cam as you also dont want too little duration with a lot of compression, thats where your friends at the comp cams tech support come into play. they can help you put it right where you want it. if you have a 302 stick a h.o. cam in it if you really want your firing order switched, or get a cam that puts your engine where you want it by getting the duration lift and sep to meet your needs. the truck brackets in the front will bolt on just have to use the water pump for the truck, everything truck should stay if all you r changing is the long block assembly, but if you do put a ho cam make sure you change the firing order to the 13726548, and it is a hot debate whether to change the injector order but i did b/c i had a rich code at the o2, fixed it by swapping the 3-4 and 5-7 non primary wire, but if you dont have problems with it might as well leave it alone but i did so i didnt have any further problems. if you r thinking 351, just get everything that is 351 and not 302 and drop it in there, pan to intake and exhaust, but i used my 302 computer and a com cam with no problems and am happy with the perf, since you have a vacuum modulated trans ,(c6 or aod), to control shift points you will have no problems there, i am going to have to get a chip to adjust mine where they should be for my cam, after i finish putting in new bearings b/c i dont have a manual or a non computer auto trans.
