At 2400 miles my '21 F350 just got it's first stone chip on the front of the hood just to the side of the "S" in Super Duty. I'd like to repair it and then get a clear film protector put on. Does anyone have any experience with touch-up paint, particularly on Rapid Red (Code D4)? There are many brands of paint out there and I'd like to use something others have had good experiences with (or at least avoid known substandard products). Brands I've looked at include Chipex, Dr Colorchip, Duplicolor and Automotive touch-up.com. I found Ford/Motorcraft P\N PMPC-19500-7283A at Amazon as well, though color name is "Ruby Red" and the code is D4. Not sure if that's the same thing.
Another question: The chip appears white, so it definitely goes through the color. Not sure if it is through the primer. Is there an easy way to tell on a 1/8" long chip?
There was a previous discussion on touch paint where it was said that the Motorcraft paint does not match well. I would expect similar results from Duplicolor, and wouldn't be surprised if they are the same product. A few recommended https://www.automotivetouchup.com/.
Stick with your actual color, Ruby Red is not the same.
Go with the automotivetouchup.com. Order the chip repair kit which includes the clear and the base paint. Skip the pens all together.
Thanks! That one and another I found also include the mid coat since it's a tricoat paint. Looks like the tip on the pens are wider than the chip so a tiny brush or other applicator would be best.

I did more searching and found the correct Motorcraft paint but don't plan to use it. Think I'll go with the one you and ford390gashog suggested. Thanks!
If you're going to take it to a shop to get the clear protection film or whatever put on, why not check with them about touching up the chip?
Lots of those places do those kind of fixes before applying the film.

I got mine from Amazon of all places, it's a guy who actually is local to me, he makes the paint up as ordered using his computerized mixer, he includes the paint and clear as well as those tiny qtips that make chips simple to fix, the seller is "Jeff's Paint"
