AOD Shift Problem
My 1988 4x4 with 302 and AOD dont wont to shift when cold. When I first get in the truck I have to hit about 3000 rpm's before it shifts out of first. If I stop for a light just after it up-shifts then it dont downshift. After it does this one time then it fine the rest of the day. I changed the fluid and filter even though the guy said it looked and smelled fine. This did not help. Anybody seen this before?

AOD Shift Problem
Sounds as if the fluid pressure is to high, there are two adjustment points , one on the tranny another on the throttel body. I would sugest playing with the one on the throtel body first this is a "fine" adjustment. This will be the cable/metal bar that attaches to the tranny. as the throttel is pressed the fluid pressure goes up (or down) I 'm not sure...any how you will find that this will change your shift points and stiffen or losen your shifts depending on which way you go. hope this helps and good luck.

Ya I Think your right about that. I'm not much of a slush box fan so my knowledge on them is a little limited. One of my co-horts mentioned a similar problem that was resolved after replacing the front pump...? Ignorance consumes me on this issue. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

AOD Shift Problem
I have an 85 f150 that does the same thing when it is cold. It only does it when the truck has been sitting and the engine and tranny is cold. I do alot of tranny work day in and day out and the only thing I have come up with so far is when the valve body gets cold it contracts like all metals and there is a small amount of grit in the valve and it takes a little more pressure to make it move. When it warms up the valve body expands just enough to let it move freely, also after a while the grit will wear grooves in the valve and body making it easier still to move. All I have done to temporarily fix it is to change the tranny fluid twice in a short period of time, like a month or two. this made it go away and I haven't had a problem with it since. But we'll see when it gets cold again.

I think you are probally right. How much trouble is it to take the valve body off and clean it. What's going to fall out. I am machinist by trade and not a mechanic but I think I can do the job if no special tools are required.
