Cutting/Splicing the RV Camera Wire?

I'm considering rerouting the Ford cable that goes to the camera that comes in the RV camera/TPMS package. Is there any issue with cutting the cables and reconnecting them?

The front wall of my trailer has the fiberglass off. With the studs exposed, I could easily run the camera wires through the wall and up to a gland on the roof. I'm good with splicing regular DC wire, but I haven't dealt with video wires. Is it all just stranded wire?

Nobody has cut into their camera cables?

I found a thread from almost 10 years ago that said there was coax in the bundle. I don't think my wire loom is big enough for that. I keep forgetting to open up the loom while I'm at the storage lot.

If you cut into the loom, take a picture. I'm interested to see what's in there. As a Ham radio opp and former 12v installer, I know there is some really tiny coax available. I'd like to see what is packed into that cable.

there is no coax in them , its all just normal wires. I considered cutting and splicing mine during the install as I had about 9 feet left over, but i tucked it under the camper under the coroplast

I had to cut into mine - the long wiring harness for the trailer - and I remember a shielded cable but I don't remember coax.

Edit - 5th wheel behind my my parent's f-350 Lariat dually, not my poverty model.

On the truck side it's all just stranded wire. There are two wires for the actual video signal (signal and ground??). Not sure on the trailer side.

Might want to recheck the truck cable as I assume it's the same as the trailer cable. The video is a shielded twisted pair cable. It is terminated into single wires before the connector.

You should have no problem cutting the wires, re-soldering and shrink wrapping them back together.

I mounted the Ford Aux camera just in front of my fifth wheel hitch in the bed, cut up the camera harness, and hard wired it into the back of the 12 pin plug above the spare tire. 4 wires ----12 volt pos & neg with two wires for the camera signal - one being shielded.

I eventually changed out the Ford camera, too much of a fish eye view and threw off my depth perception when hooking up. Works great and my fifth wheel already has 3 wireless cameras and a separate monitor in the truck, so this was a good use for the Ford Aux hook up and clear picture

I finally remembered to look at the cable when I was at the storage lot.

First look:

Unwrapping the bundle on the right, here's what I see. It looks like an uninsulated power wire along with the twisted pair. All that is in a shielded insulator. There is a bunch of powder inside the shielded insulator.

If I can get some conduit run through the attic of my trailer, I'll cut the cable and fish it through the conduit. For conduit, I'm going to try using PEX, which has a smaller outer diameter than 1/2" schedule 40 PVC.

I sent a question to Nichols Manufacturing (maker of aftermarket TPMS accessories and cable solutions for the Ford TPMS/camera system) about the wires and how to get the connector off the cable.

Most likely, that is signal and ground and power and ground. The unjacketed wire, that's gotta be a ground, otherwise it's just a reinforcing wire for pulling the bundle, or possible it's twisted down the bundle as a shielding conductor.

There are four (insulated) wires going into the connector that is plugged in at the camera. I'm guessing that at some point the uninsulated wire becomes insulated, but I haven't found that spot yet.

They must convert to coax somewhere. Found this under the center console

I cut and spliced my camera wire going to the rear of my camper and it works just fine. I did use aluminum tape and wrap the spliced area to try and maintain the continuity of the shielding.

Did you solder the splice or use a butt connector?
