Help!! I have a excursion v10 Problem Need experts
I Have a 2000 excursion 2 valve 6.8L v10 Been in garage for 1 year as I tried to fix it. it just was missing real bad and found all clips on fuel injectors and c.o.p broke, found 13 followers bad, 10 lifters bad. Replaced timing chain seals and seated valves, new gasket etc. Did not touch short block, new high volume oil pump. it ran just fine purred like a kitten before. Short of misses. Now I start it after all this and white smoke which was partly bad gas but that's fixed. but back fires every so often and when it starts it has to turn over and over with no apparent compression, doesn't start till battery almost drained. when it ran out of gas it backfired pretty loudly. Also scanner is saying bank 1 is rich. I am thinking timing was set wrong but i don't know for sure. Is there a way of checking timing without taking it all back apart? Looking for all and any ideas Please!!!!! and or what to check?Please help!!!! it had always started fast in the past fyi
There is no way that I know of to check the timing chain without taking the front cover off. But these are an interference engine so it would not have to be off much and you'd end up with bent valves or broken pistons.
The scanner saying "Bank 1 rich" is often misleading. What can happen is that the electronics detect a rich condition and attempt to lean out the cylinder in that bank. A slight leaning doesn't change the test sufficiently to look normal so the bank is leaned a bit more. This can repeat until the bank is leaned to the systems limits.
You're having trouble starting the motor and a severe leaning of the motor could explain that. So could a faulty O2 sensor.
The place to start is to connect a good scanner/analyzer to the motor and checking the O2 sensor voltage and fuel trims.

Dweber85rc so if it was one tooth off btdc or atdc it would not cause this?
Also back behind cylinder 5 is part of the gasket not covered and a hole that goes into the block. sent my borescope down but gets to small for camera.

I am not 100 percent if 1 tooth off either direction would cause this kind of issue. I do know that they are interference engines and if it is off too much your putting in a new engine. If you are not sure if it was timed correctly the only course of action is to pull the cover and recheck it.

Correct me if i am wrong, but assuming he has already run the motor in its current state, potentially interfering to hell, doing a compression test will not cause any further harm, and will tell him whether its even worth taking the cover off, or just pulling it intact and sending it to rebuild.
At the very least he will learn how good his compression is... of isnt. If the compression is very low, or is completely gone for some cylinders, then he need not waste his time tearing it apart, its *****ed, just pull it intact and find a rebuild shop, or a crate motor, etc.
