PS Pump questions

Hello to all of you classic Ford fanatics!! I have a 77 F250 with 460 and C6. I currently have the original PS Pump with the pencil thin fill tube. I found a Ford PS pump from a 80-89 for sale (see pic) and was wondering if it will work on my truck and how much of a PITA it'd be to swap it over? Also, does the type of PS pump dictate which PS fluid I need to use. I currently am required to use F-Type...will I need to change fluid type if I swap to the newer pump style? Also, what do these things go for in the US? Thanks all.

As long as the new pump came of a 460 motor so the bracket fits properly it should be adaptable with the exception of possibly the power steering lines may needing to be fabricated because of a difference in the steering gear box placement and or fittings. There is a chance they may fit however. For a certain answer on the fluid question just reference the owners manual of the vehicle the pump came off of. The manual should be available online for reference.

Thanks for the reply. It's off a diesel motor....that's all I got from the seller. It's kinda pricey anyway. He wants 125 Euros (about $150). What do they cost used over there?

Thanks redroad, I can read German, but I am American. And I actually buy some stuff from Rockauto. Just didn't think to look on there.

That looks to be a Ford C-II design pump you are asking about. 1st off what is wrong with your current p/s pump? Leaking, weak, does not work very well, making a lot of noise, why do you want to upgrade? Because that upgrade (to that pump) IMO is not worth it. Now if you want to do a real upgrade, get a Saginaw p/s pump. There are a lot of complete kits out there to do this swap. Some FTE talk below.

So back to your question, what really matters is will that bracket fit your 460, it came off a diesel, so there might be an fitment issue. What about the other bracket you need to be able to tighten it once mounted? And if you do get it to fit, will the pulleys line up to put a belt on? Will you need a different length belt? Will you need to add a tensioner? And there might be a little bit of work if the line threads are different. So how is the access to threaded adapters over there?

As far as what fluid to use, yes follow you owners manual. Some people say use actual power steering fluid, some say trans fluid. I am not opening that can of worms discussion. Different fluids is probably due to different seal material. Anyway, if you go from one fluid type to the other, then yes I would flush out the old and pump in the new.

Also FYI you know you need a special p/s pulley puller and can not use the 2, 3 or 4 arm/finger puller.

Thanks everybody for the input/2 cents.... I was thinking about replacing the pump because the old one makes some minor noise and I was thinking that the other one would be easier to fill through the wide mouth. I DO have a repair kit for the old pump that I was going to install. After reading the above info, it seems as though it will be more hassle than it's worth so I will be keeping the pump that I have. Thank you everybody for helping me make an informed decision.

If it just noisey, drive it until it gives up the ghost. Then upgrade. Get and use a skinny necked down transmission funnel to make filling up easier.
