I have a question, not sure if this is the right fourm to put it in seemed like it to me. Anyways my friend has a stock 97 f250 4x4 460 auto stock 3.73s L/S front and rear vs. other friends 77 f150 4x4 auto(C-6) 400(hot rod mag. build up but with headers, 4bbl edel intake and carb msd ign.) 4.56 gears 9" of lift 35s detroit locker rear L/S front. They want to hook them up with stock tires on both in the for a pull off I think that built 400 will pull that 460 around if he can hook up, what do you guys think?
*if* traction is "identical" the guy with the 4:56's will win the first half of the pulloff.
Even the mighty 460 doesn't start to build power until it's cranking out some RPM's. The differentials will provide "compensation" that will get the little motor into it's power ban first.
. . but Lordy, once that big block starts breathing that little motored feller better have his seat belts snugged down 'cause he's going for a ride - backwards.
. . of course, this is ~pure~ opinion. There are way way to many variables to say "for sure".
I'd agree with that hypothesis, CT. Are they being hooked axle to axle or frame to frame? Better use some thick chain. Either of these has enough power to break a link given the right amount of traction.
Hard to say, at first I would have said the F150 due to the locker axles, but a 1997 F250 is a HEAVY TRUCK, its weight on dirt might give it the traction advantage over the much lighter 1977 F150. The gear ratios don't really enter into it as the much taller tires on the F150 would negate the lower ratio, and then both also have the high/low transfer cases to help.

I've always said that "hooking up" is dumb, because there are too many variables to TRUELY prove anything. If they want a real test, go to a local tractor pull. There is usually a street truck class. If both rigs had the same tires (traction is the key), the test should erase any doubts.
OR: Take them both to the dragstrip and let them run solo runs with a loaded trailer (same trailer, same load, about 5000#). This is the best test to me, because you can use the entire powerband while maintaining traction.
P.S.- You might find it interesting to research how many people are killed every year hooking up. We lost a pretty, sweet girl when I was in high school doing this. She was sitting in the middle beside her boyfriend and the hitch snapped, came thru the back window and hit her in the back of the head. That was 8 years ago, and her boyfriend still has trouble dealing with it today.
