Popping noise out of the intake is a pretty good sign that your intake valves are leaking. You can inject compressed air into your bad cylinder's glow plug holes while its at TDC on compression stroke and listen to the exhaust, intake, and breather for hissing noises.
Based on your discription, im guessing your intake valve guides are gummed up and the valve springs arent strong enough to close the valve completely.

Coming through from where?? Do you have any idea how sloppy a valve guide would have to be to actually see combustion gases coming through a guide?

Being a full-time heavy truck/diesel engine mechanic for over 30 years, that too would be a first for me or anyone I ever worked with.

Raaaaaaymooooond......sizzzle. Too hot dude. Awesome.
i was thinking if he blew compressed air up........anyway...

what kind of “injector juice” did you put in the fuel filter? there’s some narly stuff outa therea..
diesel Kleen tank and fuel cleaner shut my truck down after 3 fill ups from its use. Could be something there.
tjc talked bout a trick with cold water on the pump to see its toasty.

and Raymond....whats your diagnosis? What or where do you start with these conditions?

So when i bought my f350 the gps were bad and it smoked white until i actually would drive it....didnt really go away until i burned all the fuel from the exhaust that didnt burn during the cranking process. And it smoked
alota white. Thatsa fuel in the exhaust. Not blown head and water.

Not sure how the black means fuel cause its oil through the rings that makes it black which is why under load it turns black because the rings are worn and oil pushes through them “under load” or with more pressure or something like that....

the 2 and 4 gps wet seems to say its not burning the fuel or not compressing the fuel so it goes to exhaust and viola...white smoke...which is new to this truck....okiedokie

black smoke is not new to this truck so thats normal i am guessing.

why is 2 and 4 not compressing the fuel overnight?
valves are open
rings finally gave out
pump timing is good or lots more will be happening it seems.
popping in the intake seems like 2 and 4 have open intake valves on compression stroke. Would they have to be all the way open for 0 compression per the test?

hmmmmm

Raymond, all you ever do is criticize posters when they try and help instead of helping the OP. At least we try to help. So what does your 30 yrs experience on diesel say on this? All us plebs are waiting on your words of wisdom.

If he's got zero compression on 2 cylinders, that says it all. Time to spend a while under the hood to determine why.

OK, picking up a set of Heads tomorrow, Once I finish work on my 1981 Camper, will start pulling the diesel and getting to the bottom of this. It has been burning oil, black smoke on start and when under load, so my just rebuild the whole thing while I am at it. Thanks for your help and insights everyone. will be back when I start the work I am sure.

Common on aircraft engine, but its usually the exhaust valves that stick. Its called 'Lycoming morning sickness' because is usually sticks when the engine is cold.

The only time I correct anyone is when they are so off the mark due to not having ANY basic diesel engine knowledge that they are leading the original poster in a money wasting, time wasting wrong direction. Everyone has a right to express an opinion, but a person should know a little bit about the subject before giving an "opinion" so he's not leading the OP down the wrong path. Yours is a perfect example.
Ack. Pull valve cover. Run it and see if you get any combustion gasses coming thru.
Feel free to explain, gasses coming out the pushrod holes in the head or where? Sorry, but that makes as much sense as engine oil oozing out the emergency brake lever. Not to mention, you start one of these engines with the valve covers off and the only thing you'll see is engine oil flying ALL over under the hood from being pumped up to the rocker arm assemblies.

Before you decide to do a major teardown, pull the valve covers and check for broken valve springs. It's not common, but I've seen a couple broken ones screw up the valve timing enough to show zero compression plus a lot of smoke. Hate to see you tear it down if that was all that was wrong, not common like I said, but something to check first.

You won’t have oil spraying all over, you can idle with the valve covers off to troubleshoot. There will be some oil slinging around, there has to be. I’d be real worried if there wasn’t. I wouldn’t idle for very long, but YouTube is filled with videos of guys trying to find the famous IDI tick noise, idling with their covers off. One of my favourite vids is of fellow member Macrobb starting his 7.3 on a stand with the covers off. I cringe at the amount of either he uses lol.

I apologize for using the term "flying around". Your term above, "slinging around" is MUCH more correct--major, major difference, right?
