Overheating - Update

I was running a few errands with he kids an noticed the fan clutch kept coming on. Engine temp went to high. It did this a few times then the check engine light came on. I currently have the truck cooling down in the shop so I can take a look at the possible problem. Anyone have any ideas? The coolant looks fine and the level is good. I can smell coolant but no obvious leaks. A couple of weeks ago I noticed while I was driving that the temp crept up and the fan clutch came on and the temp went down. It would maybe do that a couple of times during a 20 -30 min drive. Today was a different story all city driving and the outside temp was 102. Could it be water pump? Im gonna go inspect ill check later if anyone has good ideas as the cause.

Thanks

2011 6.7 109k

8/24 update.
Just got my truck back from my mechanic. It was a coolant hose going to the turbo. They had to take the air intake off to get to it. Thats probably why I couldn't find it. I didnt think it was the turbo.

proabably best to check the coolant on a cold motor and level. Check the level then.

look for leaks on all hoses since you smell coolant.

If you have access to a scanner and can look at the datastream, you will want to look at the temp sensor when the engine is cold to see if it correlates to ambient temperature. It's common to smell coolant odor from the degas bottle. That doesn't mean you have a leak, but it doesn't mean you don't. Check the level when the engine is at ambient temperature. I doubt the problem is with the water pump unless the impeller blades have deteriorated from cavitation or corrosion and that's not likely on a 6.7. The impeller could have come off, but that would give you nuclear meltdown overheating that would be cured with a fan. And you can have belt slippage that can cause the water pump to turn slower than it should, but you'd be hearing that belt squeal. If the sensor checks out, then it gets more complicated. You'd be looking for blockage, a faulty thermostat...and it has more than one, a dirty radiator or something like that. If you don't have the tech experience with the 6.7, it can be cheaper and faster to farm the job out to the pros. You don't want to get into one of those throwing parts at the truck until the problem goes away.

Update I notice my truck will leak coolant after it sits for multiple days. This happened twice. My truck was parked for 3 to 4 days without running. I came out and find a 10 inch puddle of coolant. I looked pretty hard to find out where its coming from. ITs coming from somewhere in-between the fire wall and the motor. It drips down the passenger side of the oil pan. anyone have any ideas?

check the valley of the motor, the turbo connections. There is a coolant line there that has been known to leak.
