rear differntial - when to change
just had my truck serviced and was told rear diff needs to be changed. it was changed 5k miles ago. i told them this and they said it is awfully dirty. can this be possible?? i have been off road a few times but nothing major. thanks

At what rate gear oil turns brown or black I'm not sure. It is a natural occurance. Color therefore is not necessiarily a discriminator. If you changed it 5K ago then you should be good to go.

Unless you are towing, it is more like 100,000 miles. However, if it is submerged in water and the vent hose is missing or leaking, you need to change it. If you have a limited slip unit and used the additive, the oil will "look" dirty just because of that.
