I've been digging around on some of these forums for a e4od swap but I cant find much. I plan on putting a e4od in my 1978 f250. The np205 will likely bolt up to e40d with a clocking ring. But If anyone has completed the swap please send me some info!!!
I have not done this or looked into it but 1 of the biggest things is the motor to transmission bolt pattern, Do they make the E4OD in the 400 bolt pattern?
It sounds like you have the transfer case worked out.
And you will need to run an after market computer controller.

I know a guy (Jeff is his name real nice guy, you might just PM him and ask) that did that swap, but he put a none turbo IDI diesel into his 4wd F250. Believe he has an E4OD and the controller he needed is like 500 bucks.

Well then its looking like the next step would be the converter to flex plate and its bolt pattern.
Will the 400 starter work with the flex plate if it needs to be changed out?
As they say someone has to be the first LOL

No idea on any of that, but pretty sure he had the C-6 the diesel came with, but as I understand it he wanted the E40D and it would not work right matter what the wiring set up was. Could not get it to shift right until a special trans shop hooked up their $$$$$ controller. Like 800 to 1000 bucks back then.

But don't places like us shift and others now have good stand alone controllers?
One of the cheaper options for controlling the e4od would be the TCU for an idi, as it was a completely mechanical motor.. another, if you don't mind doing your own tuning and wiring, is a microsquirt setup, can tune it to shift however you want to.. us shift makes the quick 4, and you can tune it, and it comes with a tune, but is more expensive.. IIRC, the quick 4 setup with harness is around $600, where the microsquirt is $300, and you have to build your own harness..

I'd like to go with the us shift plug and play would be the best for me
