ok, i have a 78 f150 and it wont start. It likes to do this to me and leave me stranded places. In the past it has done this a few times, but for the most part it usually will start right up. I was wondering if anybody can diagnose this symptom. I try to start it and all i get is a slight grinding or tapping type sound. Sort of like if you took a paperclip and let it barely hit a portable fan's blades as they spun around. I left the lights on too and the battery was dead, but even after getting a jump it is a no-go. I am thinking that that little thing with the teeth on the starter is stuck or something. Any help will be appreciated, i have to miss work because of this. Thank you.
The starter gear is either stuck or chewed up. But that definitely seems to be the problem from the noise you described. Pull the starter and have a look.
I agree, it sounds like low voltage and the solenoid is clicking because it doesn't have enough voltage to stay engaged and turn the starter. I would start with cleaning the cable ends abd battery terminals. Also check the connections at the solenoid and the ground wire at the block to make sure that they are tight and clean.

I guess i figured it out, it just needed a jump, the kid that tried to give me a jump when it first wouldnt start was in a car and it didnt do anything at all. Later me and my dad came back in his 4runner and that did the trick. I dont know why cars can never jump the truck, last time i needed a jump i tried to get one from a jetta and it eventually took an 80's bronco to get it done. I was hoping i wouldnt have to take off the starter, thats always a pain when your broke down in a parking lot in the winter. Thanks for the replys. I appreciate them.
By a good $99 jump box. I never leave home without mine. If somebody else needs a jump, instead of foolin' with the jumper cables and stuff, I just whip out the old box, clip on to the terminals of their battery and they start right up!!
An added bonus, if you own won't start, you can jump start yourself instead of being embarrassed about being seen trying to get a jump from a little German car that would fit in the bed of your truck.
