Bad PCM...Now what?

Well I pulled the PCM out today and opened it up and it looks like 2 of the 3 capacitors are leaking. The rest of it appears to be in pretty good shape though. Any suggestions on what should I do? Should I buy a rebuilt one, have this one rebuilt, see if an electronics repair place will work on it?

The advantage to buying one locally (O'Riley Autozone) is they come with a one year warranty and if you have an issue you can get it replaced overnight instead of shipping one off $ and waiting for ? to get it back. There are no new ones and Ford uses the Cordone reconditioned ones to sell just like O' Riley. I have bought three from them for various trucks and never had an issue. Good luck on whatever you decide to do. Sandy

thanks Sandy, I’m glad to hear that. I kinda hate to give up the original for a core seeing how it’s in pretty good shape, though I have no real reason to keep it

You could replace the capacitors yourself if your positive that's the problem .

I have no electrical experience and would be afraid of messing something up

The core charge for the PCM ranges from $50.00 to $80.00. I kept mine for about two week first time and when I was convinced the new one worked I took it back for my credit. Changing the capacitors as mentioned is doable but it's not like a diy soldering two wires together. You could always keep the core and try it and have a spare, but the rebuilt PCM's are not going anywhere as the demand continues to increase as our trucks age. With the warranty you get the replacement free for a year with immediate turn around so the spare is not necessary for a year. 2dwoods has a valid point.

I ordered one from this place called Pro Rebuild through their eBay store. The price is good and the core charge is small.

you mentioned the warranty and three trucks. Did you mean three eec-iv trucks or theee computers for various vehicles amd did you have any duds or did you just mention the local overnight for the practicality of it? I think it’s excellent advice especially since most retailers are going to have the same supplier, cardone, and making the best of a stores distance or supply network is sage advice to anyone who isn’t likely to move or can find one within a shot of anywhere most of the country

Two were mine. A 93 4.9 and a 95 4.9 and my bro in law's 93 5.8. No duds. All Cordone from O'Riley. My 91 460 is still the original. Sandy

If you post your calibration code, on driver side B pillar, our GURU's, can tell you if the one you have is correct, or it may have been changed out before you acquired the truck.

you seem an expert, where on a pcm would you find the hopeful matched code? I only ask because my truck says California emissions on scan tool and the hood says federal and matches the vin but so does the computer and if I might be looking at the same issue but different engine it would be helpful
thanks

nope far from it, just what I have leaned from our Guru's, never assume its original, if your assuming then assume its bad until tested, subford, usually has this info, the calibration code, helps him know where to look, and tells which specific PCM is needed for said, truck, and with these trucks getting long in the tooth, and people just getting you dont know for sure if PCM is original or they had issues.
