So the OEM radiator on the 2002 F350 in the sig is starting to leak, just wanted to pick the collective brain trust's thoughts on a replacement. Any recommended brands or sources to look at? I know mishimoto is a big name out there but I have seen mostly mixed reviews online. Obviously the OEM plastic tanked radiator made it almost 20 years, are the aluminum welded radiators worth it or should I stick with the OEM? Thanks in advance!
Do you mean the plastic Degas bottle under the hood? Or do you mean the actual radiator. I haven't heard any negative feedback about the actual Mishimoto radiator and the only complaints I've heard about their stainless Degas bottle is the fact it doesn't provide clear and easy visibility into the fluid. The coolant level viewport is pretty small, and you don't get the clear immediate visual feedback when you open the hood as you do with the clear Degas bottle.
The OEM replacement Degas bottles seem to leak for a lot of people from what I've read online, which is why I haven't replaced my slightly faded/discolored one.
I’d cross shop the OEM replacement and the Mishimoto and which ever was priced better I’d probably go with. Theoretically I like the all aluminum one but there’s probably no performance gain to notice.
The radiator itself, just a cursory glance through amazon, fleabay and other vendor sites, seems people either give the radiator 5 stars or 1 star and not much in between.
I bought one of those ebay all aluminum ones July of last year for one of the trucks at work, so far it has held up good and no problems or modifications when I installed it.
I'd go with whatever the local part shop sells with any warranty. It will show itself good or bad needing replacement pretty quickly. If good beyond warranty it will stay good long enough.
That said if you have the coin a Mishimoto radiator is hard to beat. I have a Mishi IC and the welds on it are freaking jewelry. Highest quality.
For degas bottle go OEM or Dorman, an aluminum can with limited visibility is just stupid.
I've had a $200 Ebay all aluminum welded up radiator in both our trucks for about 8-10 years after the oem in the Excursion developed a leak. They didn't need any modifications to get into place...
I dont have much else to add, It seems spectre makes the plastic oem replacement for pretty much everyone and its either great or has issues, buy with a warranty somewhere.
You got 19 years from the Ford one. I can't think of any reason to buy anything different.
The only problem is in recent years we have seen a decline of motorcraft parts for "older" vehicles like the trucks. Im led to believe they are not being manufactured by the same folks who built what originally came in the trucks. i.e overseas low bidders
The degas bottle is another example of this.
