well that bites

doing some P.M. today, dropped the cover off my 14 F150 rear axle with a H9 code and found this !

I've wondered a few times in snow if it was getting worn out I guess this explains that! Bought it end of 17 with about 56K on it and couldn't find any thing that showed signs of being wrenched on, somebody got screwed. I guess me also by default.

So where is the issue? That's a limited slip carrier.

If I'm seeing it correctly, looks like some spider gear damage, chunk missing out of top right and what appears to be a good size chip laying on the carrier.

Perhaps it's because you're viewing it on a mobile phone screen and I'm looking at it via 24" HD monitor? I swear I see a chip out of that top right spider and a chunk of steel on the bottom left of the carrier. So hard to tell from a pic with possible reflections skewing the view.

I'm saying the "chip" is the reflection of my led trouble light that was to right and just behind phone when I took pic. I'd like to claim I cleaned that area but I didn't, but I did rotate things and took a close look at gears ect. I'm no expert but that looks like an open carrier, where are the clutches and springs I'm used to seeing? It is my 1st 9.75 but not the first trac-lock. Now I wish the cover was still off. ooh and when I was turning left rear tire in neutral to see as much of the gears and spiders the right wheel made no effort to turn? both in the air. ????

not sure how much it proves on a 14 with 96K on it but I just jacked up one side and in neutral I can easily turn the one in the air.

The clutches are between the side gears and the carrier.

The clutch packs were never very aggressive. So many of these units needed pack replacement under warranty it was unreal. You can rebuild them and shim them tight, however there will be a chatter around turns. It's a trade off but definitely works.

If you decide on the truetrac, I have one ready to bolt in. I was going to put in my truck until they announced the new electric F150 coming out next year. I put a deposit on one and there's no sense in putting it in. Brand new even has the carrier bearings already installed. Take a loss @ $600.00 for the whole unit.

Would have to be a local pickup, it's way too heavy to bother with shipping.

What is an H9 axle? My 2014 with HD package has a mechanical Limited slip rear. It has a B6 axle number.

Looks easy to replace clutch packs with no springs. Looks like pulling the pin, rotate the spiders out of the way, push the axles in, pull c-clips, pull axles back out ... might let a fella remove the side gears and replace the the clutch linings, ... or shim if desired. The gear teeth trying to climb each other under load applies the clamping force, and the only time they slide under pressure is in a turn. If turning an axle by hand with no power applied, there is no clamping pressure other than any shims, so likely they will then turn easily as noted. My '07 does so, but if I'm mashing the gas on a turn, I can tell it's limiting slip.
