Credit unions are pretty good for basic account services. I am a member of the San Francisco Credit Union. Brokerages also offer free checking, savings, credit cards.....and free trading. Now I just need money.
Almost every place I go accepts credit and debit cards. Just a few restaurants and bars are "cash only". But those places are going away. As the old owners sell, the new owners reopen with point of sale computers. I don't think there will be any cash only businesses in another 25 years. 25 years ago, I paid cash for gas, food, drinks..... If I paid cash today. I would have to walk around with hundreds of dollars. Fill the gas tank for $100. Dinner $100. Bar tab $100.
I don't carry cash. I pay with a food stamp card, or debit card. The Dodge broke down today, a block from my bank. Had it towed home. Sounds like something broke in the timing belt area. The engine runs smoothly, but it sounds like a bolt, or bolt head broke and is being bumping into the belt. Throw a bolt into the dryer and turn it on, and that is the sound it is making. And of course, to get to it is going to be labor intensive due to everything being so crammed in together. Might as well have the timing belt replaced while the mechanic is in there. So much for my plan to use the new credit card to pay off the laptop in the first month.
No, they informed me Monday that it would not be delivered until Saturday.
Just been informed by XocticPC that my $1,800 laptop is on the way. Checked the tracking number, and UPS tells me it cannot go to the UPS access point due to restrictions set by the sender. Which means next Wednesday they will deliver it to my apartment..... So it was a total waste of time to set up the access point, because UPS is going to deliver it to my apartment. Which means I have to sit outside and pray I see the UPS truck pull in the driveway. I am going to contact XoctixPC and see if they can lift the restriction.
Kind of late now, but do you have a friend that lives in a house.. or maybe your mechanics shop? The business location seems like a good option.
When I had my Hot Rod motor delivered, I had it delivered to the local Hardware store. They had a fork lift and could put inside until I got off work to pick it up.

I have sent the email to XocticPC, but since UPS has already picked up the laptop, I doubt they can remove the restriction. Really makes me mad that I can't have an expensive item sent there so only I can pick it up...
You might as well have your stuff delivered to a Starbucks. Then you can sit at the Starbucks with air conditioning. cold drinks, sandwiches, salads, pastries....until UPS comes in.
For years, a friend of mine had packages sent to United Airlines Receiving Dock at The Airport. It was always "his name" c/o UAL Receiving. Then he went to the dock, which was open 24 hours, and got the package from the receiving clerk. He was only a baggage handler, not an engineer or someone like that. Those were also personal packages of things he ordered for himself, not work related company supplies. But it didn't matter. Nobody knew the difference. After he stopped working there, he kept doing it. Nobody at the receiving dock opens the package. Nobody at the receiving dock knew that he was no longer an employee. He walks in, says, "I'm here for a package for (his name)". After so many years, the receiving clerks all knew him by face. The packages are always along the wall next to the receiving clerk's station. He had to stop it when he moved. You don't drive over 100 miles to pick up a package.
Some of the benefits of living in a small town. I can have packages sent to several locations no problem. I had a set of used tires and wheels sent to the local parts store one time.
There are a lot of advantages to living in a small town. When everybody knows each other, it feels safer. In The City, the neighborhoods are kind of like that. I still know people in the old neighborhood. I know the merchants when I walk the block. The bartender knows what I drink. The waitress knows what I eat. Old women still throw shoes at me, because I "ruined" their daughters' reputations. I still flirt with the baker's chubby daughter, only because I know it pisses him off.
I don't have connections at the airport, so that option is out. Just going to have to dress cool, and sit in the shade of the carport. Considering this laptop is $500 more then the one lost, I don't want to take any chances. I will keep my phone and tablet with me, to watch the drivers progress.
I'm going to wait a month or two to get the car fixed. Had this happened before I bought the $1,800 laptop, I would fix it right now. However, I want to get a couple of payments on the Citi card before I send the car to the repair shop. Of course, plans can change. If the truck breaks down next, I'll get the car fixed earlier to take advantage of the AC.
I know what you mean about the heat. At 11:30 last night it was still 92 degrees here. Had the AC on all night. Turned it off about 7am this morning. However, I am sure it will go back on around 11am. They are predicting Sunday and Monday to be 114 degrees. I don't even go outside in that heat. I pray Wednesday is not that hot.
