Been thinking about a 6.7 diesel or 7.3 gas motor. Pulling 8,500# camper currently but will the 7.3 be enough to pull a 12,000# if we decide to upgrade? Gas is definitely lower maintenance and we would prolly only be averaging about 8,000 miles per year only which 1or 2 thousand would be actual pulling. Thoughts everyone? I've heard the 7.3 is a monster motor also.
We are towing an 13000lb fifth wheel with our F20 7.3/4:30 gears and it tows like a boss! Drinks gas like a Boss as well!
What model is the 5th wheel? Is it 13000 GVWR, or is that the actual weight loaded for camping? I’ve got a 7.3/4.30 CCLB 11900lb GVWR F350 XLT on order and am trying to determine my limit for my next trailers size. I was looking at 14-15k as the max GVWR, leaning towards 14k. Also curious about your gas mileage towing. I get about 8 towing my 10000 GVWR travel trailer with my 6.2/3.73. I’m planning on about the same with the 7.3 and bigger 5th wheel.

Its a Cedar Creek 345IK, getting around 8 MPG towing on fairly level roads.
Your current trailer will be okay easily. When you get up to what you are describing it can, but you will notice it more. The 7.3 is a beast no doubt. We have a TT but plan to one day get a 5’er around the 10,000 lb range or so.
Pulling a 12K GVW 5er that actually weighs about 10,750 loaded for camping. Get 9 MPG with 7.3 and 4.30's on two-lane 55/60 MPH highways in the midwest. Previous 6.2 with 4.30's got about 8 MPG "out West" in the heavier winds and at elevation. Expect the 7.3 to do about the same.
I'd probably max at a 14K GVW 5er and expect to actually pull 13K.
When we changed from the 6.2 to the 7.3, we also change from an F250 to an F350. I will say that the towing ride is better with the F350 and it handles the wind better.
My 2020 XL F-350 7.3 CC LB Tows a 15,000 Jayco toy hauler at about 7 to 8 MPG
Depending on wind conditions ..
Empty is about 12-13 in town, 15 on the highway ..
Does a very good job of it !!
I'm very happy with the mileage loaded and empty ..
