wiring question

I am trying to add an electric fuel pump, but I cant find anywhere to tap enough power to run the thing. I just want a key on power source. I tried to run off of the soleniod where it has key on power, but there isnt enough voltage there to run it. When the key is on, there is only about 10 volts there when the battery has 13.5. I tried to change the soleniod, but that didnt help either. Any ideas? Truck is a 66 F100.

Run a relay for it. I run one for the BG280 on my drag car. It's easy to wire in. If you need some diagrams e-mail me

You can run it from the red wire on your brake switch off the Master Cylinder. 12 volts there.

If you want a good location to tap the fuel pump, find a switched lead off of the ignition switch and run that to a relay. Then, run a line directly from the battery to the relay and connect the pump to the relay.

Another good thing to do would be to invest in a wiring diagram from this site. Its only about 6$ and well worth it.

One thing to note: If you put the pump on a switched lead, it will run everytime the key is on. So even if the engine isn't running, there will be fuel pressure on the carb. This is bad for the carb and the pump. You might want to consider running a second relay to the oil pressure sending unit to ensure the engine is running when the pump is. You could also trigger the pump relay with the start position of the switch to prime the carb, and when the engine is running you have fuel. In an accident when the engine dies the pump dosen't continue to run.

If this dosen't make any sense, I'll work on a diagram that will help to explain it.

ok... Here's a diagram that should make it a little clearer.

Be sure the relays you use are for continous automotive duty with the proper amperage rating for the pump your using.
