I have a '64 F100 with a 6 cyl (I believe it's a 223). The truck has a floor shifted 3 speed, and I would like to replace it with an auto for my daughter to drive. Will a later model C-4 and flexplate bolt up to the 6 cyl block and starter? Thanks for any help!!
John
You would have to find an original auto as the engine mounts are completely different in the later models. The 223 is mounted with a single mount in the front and two ears on the bell housing. Newer engines/trannys have two mounts on the engine and a single at the tail shaft of the tranny.
The correct tranny for the 223 I believe is the 2 speed ford-o-matic. I don't think this was an option on the trucks with the "mileage maker" six.
Your best bet is to either find a complete y-block/auto or look into the many swap options. My favorite is a 302/c4 or a 351/c4. Just find a wrecked ford van or pickup and buy one of the motor mount kits from one of the many vendors around.
Thanks for the help, guys. I have a 460, 351W, and V10 in the garage, but I think I will look into getting a 300 six instead of the V8. It's fun to be a little different.
