I am happy that this second post is not as much of a cry for help as my last. I got a new carb shortly after fixing the old one, the choke on the old one was broken anyway, so now I have the benefit of better fuel economy and a brand new carb.
It's crazy how a shop quoted me 400 bucks to refurbish an old one when a new one was 200 or so dollars after a core return.
I will get on with it now.
Can anyone tell me what it was like to do a muffler delete on your Ford truck? My friend did that and his resonator on his 2006 (Rev up engine) Infiniti G35, and it sounds like a Nissan GT-R, no joke. He dropped me off at my home after a drive around and asked "So when are you going to straight pipe it?" And it really got me thinking.
Of course, I will sound like a 5.0, not a VQ. A few videos on youtube give me a good idea of how it will sound, but not the actual decibel level. I'm not too worried about what my neighbors will think, though, considering my neighbor down the street has a 90's era F150 that is very, very loud. Not sure if there's some sort of Coyote swap, a 302, or even a 351w. Regardless, as obnoxious as some may see it, I like it.
Now the logistics. I have heard things about velocity gases and making your car sluggish in the low rev range, as well as fuel mileage getting a hit.
Really, just your thoughts, what you had to do, and any possible regrets or whatnot would be much appreciated. Thanks!
(No cats, just a muffler, by the way. There is still a 2-barrel carb if it makes any difference. No performance mods whatsoever on the truck.)
I ran long tube headers with only a couple blown out bottles and side exhaust on my dearly missed 84 F150 with a 351W. Thank goodness it sounded nothing like a Nissan, but the racket was tiring after awhile. Never gave me any troubles, but my son would get pulled over with it and the comment always was "Kinda loud, isn't it?", but he never was ticketed.
If there is a one word answer to your two word question, it would be why?
A muffler delete would be a hard no from me. I have a duals with Magnaflow mufflers on my '84 and while it sounds great, it drones on the highway and gets tiring after a while. I go out to our local classic car cruise-ins on Thursday nights, and it's obvious that lots of people enjoy "loud", but it's not my cup of tea.
Some around here think loud and obnoxious is cool.
If you want people to look at you pull down your pants at a busy intersection!
I hate the noise they make and if I could all would be ticketed and towed to get fixed!
They like this rappy crappy sounding things here, even on cars.
I dont mine a deep sound, I got a cat back on a 02 Dodge 360 cid motor and think it sounds like power.
I would maybe give a turbo muffler a try as they give a deep sound.
When I was 16 I gave glass packs a try on a straight 6 and did not hear or feel a difference so I dont know how a glass pack would be on a 302 v8?
I did have a v8 with headers and duals that I ran 2 18" straight through Hush Thrush cans.Idle had a little sound to it but get on it and it was loud, now days maybe to loud?
I am with others not my cup of tea and why?

If I had to ask myself why I would do a muffler delete, I think my only good reason is that I think it would be fun. I know I won't be fast, and a few folks may find it annoying. It's all in an effort to make my truck mine. Down south, you really don't see the bullnose anymore, especially since it's Bowtie territory in Texas. It's saddening, really. So I just want to get the most out of it as I can.
I have always been more of a measure twice, cut once kind of person anyway. I will look into it more, get more opinions, and make a decision before knocking stuff off.
Mine is a 86 5.0 and I put long tube headers on mine which then runs into electric cutouts and then into two original 40 flowmasters then dumps out under the truck just past the cab/bed crack. With the cutouts closed it has the deep sound but not over whelming when driving around but when you want to be obnoxious just open the cutouts.
I am gonna be honnest. I like a good-sounding truck and a noticeable idle, but just straight pipe sounds "wet". More like a wallowed out tractor than anything else. People might ask you if your exhaust fell off . But seriously, I get where you are coming from. I have duals and some glass packs on my truck. Those glass packs are a minimum for me. It at least gets the annoying shrieking out of it and makes it bearable and sound way better. I have had friends drive the truck by me at full throttle to see if it was annoying or overwhelming, but it actually sounds good and not loud. Loud does not equal good. The decibel level is 80 at idle which is the noise level indicated in my truck's papers.
I have had those on my truck for a year now and will build a new exhaust in a couple of months because of the drone. That will get old after a while as the others said. If you want it to be louder, put some decent long glass packs in. If you want to do it right get some Magna flow or other muffler like that. They will make it sound nice without being annoying. So much more satisfying to hear an engine roar in the engine compartment with a good exhaust instead of a mixture of exhaust leak and deafening droning.
I'm a guy who has worked and slept at all hours. Ask yourself this: how would I like it if my next door neighbor revved up his Harley a few times before he left for work right smack in the middle of your 8 hours of shut eye.
If you want showy loud, put in a bypass and save it for rallies and poker runs.

You're a lucky man that you get 8 hours sleep other than when your small duck neighbor starts his bike.

I have a 5.0 V8 with 21/4 pipe and long glass packs. They come out below but past the rear bumper.
the drone leads me to wear ear plugs at times
That's rough. I have the same problem and that is the main reason I want to build a proper exhaust with some nice mufflers. I like to have my vehicles to not be loud in the sense of annoyance, but rather full in sound and that just when I lean on it. I don't want to **** off my neighbors when I fire it up or drive through a village at night.
The muffler was about to fall off my bronco, so I went ahead and pulled it off.
it’s not what I would call loud. But it’s no longer “almost silent”. Has a quiet rumble. A performance muffler & no cats would be a lot louder. That will be my next step. I can’t stand having the exhaust ending right under the floorboard.
