4r100 refresh and assistance

Little bit of a story on this, picked up this trans as a core from a guy on the buy and sell a few years ago for the intent of putting it behind my 7.3 idit. The zf5 is crapping the bed now and pops out of third if you try to give it any load, so figured it was time to tear this 4r100 down and see what’s in it.

This trans has been rebuilt at some point and a few upgrades have been done, it has a billet torque converter, upgrade metal anti drain back valve, what appears to be most of a transgo 4r100hd2 shift kit with some pieces missing some changed and a few mods not done.

The only thing I found to be bad so far is the center support has been eaten by the case enough that the feed bolts are also starting to eat the case, and the front pump bushing looking a bit beat up.

Looks fairly clean.

feed bolts were nice and tight with locktite on them(I did pull out the filter seal)

Previous hot spot, all the clutches and steels look new.

Every clutch looks like this, you can read the printing clearly still.

Center support has some good wear from the return spring, the other side that sits against the case has a ton of wear.(more pics when I get home)

front pump bushing is chewed up a bit, from what I can tell someone was rough putting the torque converter in and chewed up the bushing, the Teflon seal on the end of the stator support has been cut with the splines from the stator, the tc snout looks nice and clean still.

More pictures to come.

The part I need help with is converting the torque converter lockup from pwm to on/off controll to use it on a older E4OD controller, from everything I’ve read on fte I just need to put an orifice plug in the front pump in the tc circuit and swap solenoid packs.

This is where I’m not sure, my front pump has an orifice installed already and is smaller than a 3/32” drill bit, the solenoid pack has 4 solenoids that all look the same on fluid side, I believe the pwm solenoid should look different? But the tc valve is a pwm valve, do I need to get the transgo lock up valve conversion?

Valves out of my 4r100 front pump, clearly has a pwm valve and what appear to be some mix and match parts from a tugger kit on the pressure regulator(I think that’s the right name for it)

Front pump out of a small block E4OD (it is a F5 pump that looks to be in great condition still), has a stock on/off tc valve and stock pressure regulator springs.(the tc lockup valve is smaller diameter then the 4r100 so I can’t swap it).

So far I’m looking at getting
Pa Cargo k36900f seal kit, I’m not sure if that comes with the sealing rings and Teflon seals.

SKP SK265805 pan, mine is all dented

pioneer 755177 front pump bushing

Transgo 4R100LU (if needed)

PA Cargo 36423f filter

Sonnax 36743g center support gasket (not sure if this messes up the clearances in the trans or not)

I am trying to keep the cost down on this conversion as I still have to do driveshaft work and around here that’s really expensive.

Any help, advice or guidance is very much appreciated

Edit: just to add a few things I forgot above.

The overdrive piston snap ring has been updated to the spiral snap ring, the epc check valve has been updated from the ball bearing to the newer ball with a point on it (not sure what it’s called exactly), the coast clutch has the updated snap ring that is extra wide and is ground to fit and the rear case bushing is the one piece bushing.

Just some more pictures of everything, can anyone tell me possibly what kind of shift kit was put in this? From what I could find it looks to be about 70-80% of a tugger kit but not all the pieces are there or all the mods done to the valve body.

Took the solenoid pack apart and cleaned it all up, the 4 solenoids all measure ~20 ohms and the epc measure 4.7ohms, someone has switched this trans over to on/off torque converter control.

Had another solenoid pack from a water logged small block E4OD that I robbed the metal frame circuit board from as it has the spot for the protection diodes, installed some 1N4007 diodes and reassembled.

Solenoid pack all disassembled and clean and both wire frame circuit boards

Area cleaned up and ready for diodes

Diodes installed

Solenoids reinstalled

Plug and protective coverings reinstalled

Circuit board soldered back on

Solenoid pack completely reassembled and ready for install.
