Has anyone swapped a non-step tailgate for one with a step? I found one with a step, but the driver side tailgate hinge is different. I could just swap hinges from my old tailgate, but the one with the step has some sort of rod in it. The other way is to change the mounting bracket, but I'm having difficulty locating the proper part.
A dealer should be able to get you the proper mounting bracket to make the swap. If they can't then I'd call a different dealer and tell them you have a truck with the tailgate step, that the hinge on the truck was damaged.
That rod is a 'spring rod,' the intent is to make it easier to close the tailgate with the extra weight of the step inside. It isn't necessary but it is certainly helpful.

Thanks in advance!
Well no difference in how it fits. You can install the tailgate right now just fine. The gates with the step have a lift assist built in. The piece you are seeing on the truck side is the tailgate dampener. This is easy to add if you want it. Available Here

I think he said the driver side hinge point is the one that has the difference and that part you linked too installs on the passenger side (I know because I installed it on mine).

Correct. On the original tailgate, it is round with a bushing. On the one with the step, it is a flat tab that is similar to the passenger side. I've been looking at parts diagrams all morning, and they are as clear as mud.
Or don’t bother with switching out the tailgate and get an AMP research bed step. I have had the Ford tailgate step on three trucks and never use it because I have moved my AMP bed step from one truck to another. It is more practical and easier to use than the Ford tailgate step.
My wife & I like our factory tailgate step & use it frequently. I don’t like the look of the Amp hanging down. Looks like an afterthought (which it is).

Do you happen to have a picture of that part. When I try to pull with that number, I get different results. I have a 2021 F250 and would like to do the same. Where did you order it from?
