Hey guys, my buddies father just bought a 97 F350 with 46,000 miles on it, with a utility bed for $12,000. Number one, is that a decent price, its not a superduty but the older style truck. Second, his father found out that it needs a new oil pan because its rotted out, supposedly its a $1800 job because the engine needs to be removed, is this true? Second, the rear differential cover is also rotted and needs to be replaced, is this common?
The reason I ask is because his father is a die hard ford lover even though every ford truck he's bought he has paid too much for then has put tons of money into them because of problems. So when he was telling me about the oil pan and rear differential covers, he just said that it is a common thing in these trucks and they always rot. I don't believe that to be true but figured I'd ask the guys who owned the trucks before making assumptions. Thanks in advanace.
Oil pan rotting out is a problem, usually in much older trucks though. Our 87 Bronco and 90 F150 had that problem. I fixed it by draining the oil, then I brazed the small pin hole shut on both trucks. Both trucks were 4x4's, I think there was enough room to drop the pan without removing the motor completely. At the most maybe just remove the motor mount bolts and raise the engine a bit. I just took the easier way out.
I think $1800 to change the oil pan is OUTRAGEOUS.... Go some place else, I'm sure you can find a much better price, shop around.
Never had any problems with diff covers. Not a big deal to replace though just get a new one.
Yeah i know the differential cover is nothing, and that price is outrageous, is there a weird placement on these deisel engines that makes it impossible to get the oil pan out without completely removing the engine? I just want to know the answers because this poor guy is gone in the head when it comes to Fords and he consistently buys trucks that need tons or work and money put into them. I'm not badmouthing Fords, its just the ones he buys that always have the problems, and his sons truck.
i had a 94 psd ( the first year for the psd) the oil pan gasket went bad 3 times and each time the motor had to come out just to rplace a gasket. so yes the motor does need t be pulled to replace the pan.
There is a TSB from Ford concerning corrosion on th oil pan. Do you know the history of the truck? The coating should work on the diffs too. I am glad I saw this, the paint on the Superduty diffs doesn't stay on long at all, and re-painting is a waste of time. Mine was almost gone at 20000 miles. I may try this on my diffs.
7.3 Oil Pan Corrosion:
Some engines may exhibit oil pan corrosion if operated in high salt enviroments. If corrosion is found, the pan should be cleaned of oil and dirt, sanded and cleaned. Apply Motorcraft PM-13-A High Temp Anti-corrosion Coating to the pan. TSB #02-20-5
