Rumor that Sterling used to be Ford?

Is it true that Ford became Sterling trucks? If so what's the history between the two?

Ford sold off the heavy truck business to Freightliner in 97. The Sterling line was a recycled name from decades earlier. The trucks didn't sell well and Daimler pulled the plug in 2009.

There is a thread of links to threads or articles regarding Ford's HD "history" up in the Tech Folder.
