So a friend of mine had a stroke 2 years ago. His wife sold 5 wheel and trailer as he can't drive .So I installed on my truck
which is a lot shorter than his old 5 wheel. The question is
fuel mileage and bug on trailer .
May help a little at sustained highway speeds but the more frontal area on the trailer the more it should help. Keeping bugs off the front of a trailer is almost impossible in my area!! Looks good on the truck.
Oh yeah, wings have been debated for years on various RV forums. Not for their effectiveness (which is somewhat established) but for return on investment.
They are expensive
They are beneficial only at highway speeds.
They make MPG worse with no trailer attached.
So if you got a good price on the thing and you'll become something of a road warrior, then you're good. My RV buddies assume they would never get their money back. With my smaller Rockwood 30ft 5th wheel and as seldom as I get to tow it, I'd never recoup my investment.
Since you have it, use it. At highway speed you will get better MPG.
Well, if it improves mileage, it should also decrease bugs. The way it improves mileage is to push air up to hit the trailer higher, so it will push many bugs higher. Probably not all, but should be an improvement. I have a bug deflector on the front of my hood and it works similarly. It improves my mileage slightly, keeps a lot of bugs or snow (depending on the weather) off my windshield, and makes my passive vents that get air from the cowl area flow less air.
I like the look though. It seems like you got a sweet upgrade there.
