pilot bearing install

pilot bearing install

i'm putting a new pilot bearing into the crankshaft of my 390, but i wasnt sure how far in it was supposed to go. right now its sitting in with about 3/16" of the bearing sticking out but i cant get it in any further with a rubber mallet. should it be flush? thanks for the help

Put it in your freezer for about an hour before you install it, then try again.

any hints on retrieving it from the crank without buying the tool?

Pack the hole full of grease, then put a dowel that's the same size as the hole in it and hit the dowel with a hammer. You may have to pack a little more grease in there after the first couple hits, but that should force the pilot bearing out.
