I just purchased a new '21 F-350 DRW King Ranch and while looking through the software updated, it shows I have a NAV update of 2019... WTF?
Don't these manufacturers update new vehicles before they ship them? My then new 2013 Buick Verano and my then new 2016 GMC Terrain Denali all had 2 to 3 year old NAV maps when purchased.
So what gives with the O.E.M.'s shipping with out of date NAV map updates?
As far as I know the current NAV version is NA 1 19. It became available as an update to the earlier trucks last year. If that is what you have then you are running the most recent version available.
It never occurred to me that "19" was the maps year. My 2019 came with version NA 1 17.
Yours is most likely up to date. When I bought my 2021 the Ford App said I needed to update my maps. I looked and they where already at 1.19. I called and was told there is a bug in the system that sends this to all new owners.
The NA1.19 are the latest Map update Ford is getting from their supplier. It is about a year and a half to two years old depending on when they came out.
As for other OEM's I am sure they buy their maps just like Ford from a supplier and install them at the factory with a image that goes into all the new cars and trucks.
you can go online and put in your VIN and it will tell you if the maps need to be updated. I remember it being free if you download them and make your own USB stick, $40 if you want them to send you a pre-made USB. I don’t think they do it for free forever, but I think when the truck is new.

This isn’t new with Ford and most navigation maps for the OEM‘s.
You have to understand, Ford has no say so over the release.of new map updates.
That’s totally up to their map supplier.
Even the most up to date maps from Ford or any OEM pale in comparison to the always updated maps from Apple, Google, Waze, and a few others.
With that being said, just use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto for your vehicle navigation.
The interface is much better than SYNC 3.
I updated mine sometime last year too, but it went to NA 1 19. When I entered my VIN this morning to check for an available update, it said that it would be the same update I downloaded last time, and only gave the option to purchase it. I assume that's because I already downloaded it for free last year.
If there is a newer version, NA 2 20, I wonder who it is available to.
