Reliable engine builders and EFI question

Hey folks, looking for a quick rundown on reliable/reputable engine builders.

what groups make a good crate short or longblock 351w?

just need a good motor to swap in while I build my 351 unless someone makes an S/d friendly longblock with a mild cam and heads.

donors are going for $2-4k here, even ones with holes in the block....

speaking of EFI, holley terminator EFI system. Im assuming stingers ecu is more user friendly but im curious about a new to me option.

You need to dumb this down for me. You are looking for a new/reman long block to use while you build another engine? That sounds very expensive. What are you going to do with it after the other engine build is done: hope to sell it to recoup some of your extra expenses? If you need to use the truck while rebuilding the 351 why not just get a used engine from a junkyard or rebuild a different engine? I bought a complete roller block 351 engine for less than $600.

I used a Denver zip code and came up with:

Good morning,

I just recently went through this. This is what I found.

Short of having one built by an engine shop which was the most expensive option (prices all over the map) most I spoke with recommended ATK. The reviews I read were all over the map from great to terrible. I spoke to them about a month ago, the price was $2,040, long block, 4 weeks time to build, and free shipping within the USA.

As My4fordtrucks said above, I also found a used engine, running, 100k miles at a salvage yard, as removed with all accessories for $500 Cdn.

Cheers,

Let me explain a touch better, sorry I didn’t do the best job.
Local shops are quoting well over $1000 to do short block work. At that point, its almost the same cost to get a decent reman or new motor. I have more shops to call but im not holding my breath.
I also can’t have the truck down for an extended period so that doesn’t help the issue any.

That said, im in a weird spot. So I figured i’d ask about reman’s and see which way is better to go.

Also, is there a difference to how auto’s and manuals bolt up? Wondering if I end up with an auto donor what needs to get moved over.

Bolt into the truck? No. The only difference is at the transmission. An automatic has a flex plate while the manual transmission has a pilot bearing in the rear of the crankshaft and a flywheel.

Ah okay. That makes it relatively easy
