Was a 70's f-150 ever produced with a 302? Am looking at a late 70's 2wd explorer with what the owner calls a 302 and seem to remember something about this in the past. Any help? Thanks
I couldn't tell you if it's original or not. I bought the truck last winter and kind of picked at it this summer. Got the rotten box off and cleaned the frame. I need more time, but mother nature won't listen. It's hard to say with a truck of this age whether anything is original, but I would guess that it is given the way things look down there. There might well be the first bit of dirt every picked up under all the layers of oilcoating and grease and graphite treatments this thing has had.
A C6 behind a 300 is not unusual, look in E/F-250/350 applications. Many service vehicles used the heavier duty C6 instead of the C4. You could also find an AOD and get an overdrive to help with fuel mileage.
They are pretty common, especially in vans. They are usually behind a 351W though. Heck, I have one out of my 77 that won't fit behind my 460, but if the C4 ever dies in my other 77, it will be behind that 302.
