So how can I tell which type of engine i have?

You'd have to measure the stroke, either by removing a head, or by removing the oil pan.

So nothing on the actual block to denote if mercury or Ford

No, Merc and Ford blocks are identical. External bits and pieces are interchangeable, and over the years engines get put together with a mixture of bits. My engine is a Ford with Merc oil pan and Merc intake.
