Remanned engine, power loss

I had a remanned 5.8L put in my 97 f350. It seems like it does not have the acceleration or towing power it should. What would cause this?

What are you comparing it to? These trucks are badly underpowered compared to a modern truck... if that is what you are using as a reference.
Otherwise check the timing and fuel pressure, if those two aren't right the truck won't get out of it's own way.

I'd start with the basics too. Look for something that did not get reinstalled correctly. Adjusted correctly.

Many times in a rebuild they will use a "stock" replacement cam but if you plot that cam and compare it to a plot of the old cam it is actually not the same. Another area to look at is the replacement piston. Many times replacement pistons are made with a compression height that's shorter by .020 or so to allow the block to be decked. This can give the new engine a lower compression ratio than the stock engine.
