1954 F100 Build

Hi, I recently got this F100 (nearing 6 months ago). It has the original 223 6 cyl engine with a 3-speed trans, the information plate says that is what it came with from the factory. My father and I are working on this truck together, we are new to the whole building old cars thing so I'm here to document our progress, share it with all of you, and ask for help along the way. We drove it home from where I bought it about 30 minutes from home. Since then we have redone the steering linkage and the brakes(including a master cylinder rebuild), a damaged bearing and race set has also been replaced on the front passenger side. The engine will no longer run because of low compression. The engine is getting spark and will fire but does not stay running, I have replaced the spark plugs. I am currently waiting on funds and a better place to work on this truck to rebuild the engine and redo the wiring. Progress on this build will be slow because I am in school, so only expect major updates during summer and maybe winter. If you want pictures or more information about the truck feel free to ask!

Prickly, welcome to FTE the best Ford truck forum on the World wide Web!

You did good. The truck looks great and you posted a lot of pictures which we love. Does the old 6 Banger need a rebuild? Have you checked the compression?

What are your plans for it? It is a good father-son project. Good luck and keep us posted.

Welcome and good luck with your project! This is what your engine could look like cleaned up:

My engine is a 52 rated at 101 hp. Yours will be bored out a bit and have a few more hp. Both versions of our engine were quite comparable in power to the Ford flat head V8's.

But it should be painted red with a silver valve cover.

It needs a rebuild. The compression is 100, 85, 65, 65, 100, 75 psi in cylinders 1-6, respectively. I plan to eventually repaint it from the frame up but am trying to make it run good first, this thing has less rust than my 2000 Ranger. The wiring is also really bad, bare copper everywhere (not to mention the GND cable being held away from the engine with a piece of twine on the passenger side of the block). I was planning on getting the American auto wire wiring harness for a 12V conversion, it currently has a 12V battery with a voltage regulator. I am open to suggestions about different wiring harnesses if anyone has recommendations for a harness that will cover the whole truck. (Link to the wiring harness I'm looking at https://www.americanautowire.com/sho...-56-ford-truck)

I'm looking into wiring harnesses for the truck. I am wondering if I need to get a specific wiring harness for the i6 and not for a v8? As of now, I don't see why there would be a difference between the two but there could be something I'm missing?

There is no difference between the 6 and 8, from a harness standpoint. That harness should serve you well.

That harness appears somewhat less "universal" than a typical street rod harness kit many of us used. If it fits in your budget it will make the installation somewhat less time consuming for a stock truck. The kit you linked appears to have terminals to plug right into some of your factory harness etc. At the end of the day you are still adding the terminals for most every wire. Whether it's worth three times the price is your call.

That seems pricy for what it is. Your call. I went with a 22 circuit Speedway harness. Gave me everything I needed and more.

It is spendy. I have seen them and it's better than the cheapest kits commonly used on this forum, but you could buy a box of new electrical parts for your truck with the spare change. Some new switches, voltage regulator and other small electrical items that are going to end up needing replaced on an old truck before it hits the street.
