I read "more common chip" to mean a current chip Chips, especially processor chips, can have a relatively short market life (i.e. <3yrs). So chips used in the design of a 2017 truck could be a 6 year or older design. Chip and component manufacturer's will prioritize their capacity on the newer stuff. A redesign may improve chip availability but it will take time for the new module design to go into production, likely a year or more even on a fast track. A new processor type chip will likely have a different form factor, pin out, voltage requirements and communication protocols. This change ripples out to other components such as voltage regulators, resistors, capacitors, buffers, memory and programming. Those changes require a redesign of the printed circuit board. And all this has to happen while maintaining compatibility with the existing systems in the truck. Not a quick solution.
Ford sourcing chips directly may help as one big order has more impact then several smaller ones but I doubt this is something Ford wants to do long term.
Understanding that I am not a techie. I am paraphrasing articles written about FORD which usually quote FORD executives. I will add a link to this article quoting Jim Farley the No 2 executive at FORD. "Is redesigning automotive components to use more accessible chips".
Lots of good conversations and some useful information. and I think most of us accept this is going to be a long haul and we're just talking about it since information from Ford is basically nonexistent. in my case if my pickup didn't show up for a year it doesn't matter, I just want it.
So as far as information goes the 5/27/21 date in theory that should mean something. if they knew it wasn't going to happen why set a date so soon just kick it out there weeks like they normally do. we'll see what today's update says.

Thanks for the links. The quotes support what I wrote about changing the design to more current chips to improve availability. But this is a long term strategy to mitigate the risk of shortages in the future. It won't help the current situation due to the amount of time it will take to implement.
No FDNB yesterday, they come out every Friday but not yesterday.
Ford wants to make sure they don't over do it with customer relations. They really are a chitty company I just wish I didn't like their heavy pickups so much better.
It was the latest taken directly from Donlens website. If you have better data from them...post it up.. Complaining does nothing to improve information.

I wasn't complaining. Sorry you took it that way. Was merely pointing out that at the time you posted that, the dates were outdated. Whatever your source was, it wasn't the most current.
Just trying not to mislead other users.
Either way looks like date got pushed back a day. So that means at minimum as of today scheduling for Retail Orders wont begin until aorund 7/15
If scheduling started May 27 and production is scheduled to start July 10, why do you say that retail order scheduling will start around July 15? Schedules are forward looking and therefore should be available before the actual date. I hope that scheduling has already started with Ford for many of our orders.

Because supposedly it was stated earlier that the scheduling that began MAY 27th was not for RETAIL orders. They said that RETAIL orderes are scheduled 5 days after JOB #1 has no errors or issues. Thats why I said they wont start til 5 days after the 7/10 date. But I see now they bumped up retail scheduling so that is great news.
That's super exciting. I was kinda wondering if they'd deviate on the normal "ok to buy" process since the changes for the 22MY are so minor. Makes sense they went this route. I'm not getting my hopes up too much, but it would sure be cool to get a VIN in the next month or two. Maybe I can squeeze in a camping trip this season...

First, I’m not from the automotive industry, so I’m talking out of my backside, but…
I’d expect that automotive manufacturers all take a breather between model years to run maintenance, update equipment, replace tools, dies and the like. Although the 2022MY will be mostly identical to 2021s, which may simplify the transition, I think there’ll still be some tweaks and groans getting the line back up to full, zero defect level, production. Having said that, it “should” be a quicker turnaround, for all I know.
