Hey everyone. So, it’s looking like I’m going to need to rebuild my current engine or buy a crate engine. I have an original 360 and would rebuild as 390 or maybe go to a 351W? This is my first project truck and would appreciate any advice on a nice engine to drop in. Transmission is a NP435 and would prefer to not have change that out as it is is good shape. It’s going to be a daily driver truck. I don’t need a monster engine, but would be glad to get rid of the gas hungry 360.
Any recommendations on places to order a reliable crate engines? I’ve been looking at Phoenix engines, but would like to price shop a bit more.
Your best bet is to just accept your fuel economy is going to suck with this vehicle. if that's a problem save yourself some time and money and buy something else.
Stay with the FE. if you don't care about power your 360 is fine just rebuilt that. a 390 would be better or a 428 or whatever you want it's just a matter of money.
I would stay away from crate engines . most of them are the cheapest parts money can buy put together by questionable at best workers. sure some are better than others but I'd rather do my own or have someone I trust do it.
Figure out what you'd like to spend and what your expectations are and you can get some fee advice. just keep in mind it may be worth what you paid for it. .
Give these guys a look, I've noticed a couple guys on this forum and the bump forum have used them. I vote you stick with an FE engine.
As far as crate engine quality, I bought a crate 460 engine from Ford racing for my Cobra in 2003 and have had no issues yet. There are some great Ford engine families to choose from, the 385 series make crazy horsepower without breaking the bank and have plenty of support. Your 360 is both anemic and horrible on gas. At least you can fix the anemic part of the equation
