Steering Colum Coupling

The rubber disk between the steering colum and the power steering gear on my 1977 F-250 has rotted out. I cannot figure out how to replace the disk. I bought a new one but I can't get the old one out? Does anyone have a any instructions on how to do this? I am in a hurry as I have is all taken apart and I need the truck soon.

are you talking about the flexible coupling? at least thats what they call it in my manual...I think I'm having the same problem..I can actually pull my steering wheel back and forth and see it pulling on that rubber disc..

Yes that's what I mean. The disk is completely gone and the steering wheel moves about a quarter turn without moving the steering gear. Anyone know how to replace it?

that thing looks like a doo hickey to me, may I suggest a large hammer? Is that a 2wd or a 4x4?

according to my Haynes manual, you might want to remove the whole steering pump to access that part, not 100% sure though, it is kind of hazy and does not refer to that part in particular

It is a 2wd. The power steering pump is nowhere near it. The power steering gear is what it is connected to. That thing highlighted in the picture seems to be a bolt with nothing to grip. It makes no sense.

That is the power steering gear. The tubes are coming from the power steering pump.

from looking at the pic again,, it would appear that you could drop the device in the bottom left corner. The pin you have highlighted may just slide into that cutout it is resting in

dunno my man. good luck though, this book is not all it is cracked up to be...if it were me, I would drop the power steering assembly, or at least loosen it to see if it will create any leeway on that pin...

i think that the correct term for the part it a rag joint. there are four bolts that go around the out side that should allow the two halfs to seperate. that is how is appeared to be on my truck (4x4) but i am sure that i would be the same. there are companies that make and sell replacements. i just can't recall the names
good luck

Well on either end of the rag joint coupler there is also a 11 mm bolt.
One way is to loosen the steering column and remove the coupler or undo those 4 bolts and pull the coupler apart exposing the rag joint.
