I'm contemplating a rear end swap to better match up the differential gear with my installed 5 speed manual transmission. My current differential is a Dana 44 with a 2.72 gear. I've got a 8.8 rear end out of 1988 f150 with a 3.55 gear where the spring and shock mounts match up but it seems the yokes are different. Would this be as simple as changing universal joints. Or would it require changing the driveshaft end or the yoke?
The universal joint bolts are the same width but the 8.8 are longer.
Yukon 1310 to 1330 adapter U/Joint. The 1310 side has a 3.219" span and 1.062" caps. The 1330 side has a 3.625" span and 1.062" caps. Both sides are outside snap ring.
Yes there are Ujoints made to do just that, I used one on a car that I swapped in a WC T5 into.
FYI
The other thing you need to look at is the axle housings or really the pinion yokes.
Measure from the axle center line to the yoke where the Ujoint sits if they are the same distance as some have a longer or shorter pinion depth between them.
If this is more then 1" difference the drive shaft will need to be made longer or shorter to work with the new rear axle.
