We've been working on this darn thing for months. We finally replaced the airflow sensor which corrected the black plumage spewing forth from the tailpipe. We rebuilt the tranny and we can get drive once again, however, here are some issues we're still tackling. We get sporadic reverse. We have to rev the engine to get it to do anything but it only works when its cold and not after its warmed up. Again, its sporadic. sometimes it kicks in nicely and other times we're praying not to end up on a dead end street where we'd have to back up. other issue is that the drive and overdrive is sporadic. We may get only 35-40 mph then it kicks in and we get proper response. Any thoughts on what we should check next? We're going to have to get another vehicle but I can't even begin to fathom selling the ol' meanie without at least making sure it will run for someone else (or consider it a loss).
It could be the shift governor. I had a problem with my 92 after I had the tranny replaced. What would happen is, when cold, ir would not shift from 1st until about 30, then kick right past 2nd into 3rd. Once things got up to operating temp, all was fine... except for a little problem with the overdrive. When maintaining about 35 - 40 mph the overdrive would kick in. This is not normal for the truck as the overdrive is supposed to kick in at about 45. Once I had the shift governor replace all was fine. Hope this helps and gives you a place to start.
its amazing how many things start to go downhill. Now we've got the truck stranded near downtown and it won't start up. AAA says its the fuel pump - at this point I dont know - this has turned out to be the worst possible thing.
can cuse shifting problems because some of the shifts rely on engin vacuum to set the hift point via the vacuum modulator. The speed governor only works on the 1>2 shift. Pull the pump relay and monitor what the pump current is battery to the pump. Should be about 5A. Under 3A the engine won't run. Usually it is a brush failure that is intermitant. Just low current cqn be a sign of a sticking regulator. Current flow is battery, to fuse, to relay, to inertia switch, to tank connector, and to pump. So did you rebuild the tranny yourself? "Rebuild" cover a lot of ground from just a couple parts to major. So does it work in reverse and not forward? Cant tell if this is a low/reverse servo problem or the forward clutch. Sure the filter is installed properly? The improved filter has a mounting screw problem that causes it to drop down and suck air.
